Guest Researcher

I am an Arabist specialised in Sociolinguistics and Arabic Dialectology, with a focus on urban Moroccan Arabic. I obtained a PhD in “Arab, Islamic and Semitic Worlds” at the Aix-Marseille University (France) in 2019, with a thesis investigating linguistic variation and its social connotations in Moroccan Arabic as it is spoken in Temara, Morocco. Prior to this, I obtained a Master’s degree in Near and Middle Eastern Studies at SOAS (London, UK) and a Bachelor’s degree in Science of Communication at the University of Bergamo (Italy)

Temara is an urban centre that has been attracting huge immigration fluxes from all over the country due to its proximity to the capital Rabat, and therefore represents the ideal point of departure for a study of dialect contact and language variation. Based on a 40-hour corpus of recorded interactions between Moroccan Arabic speakers, which I collected during two field studies, my doctoral and post-doctoral research has been focusing on the following themes:

- Inter-generational variation in language use, which allows to draw inferences on ongoing change phenomena in Moroccan Arabic

- Interactional analysis, aimed at the identification of what linguistic features speakers use in order to organise their own speech, e.g. by signalling information structure or alternating registers, in both casual and controlled conversations.

- Social indexations, i.e. how Moroccan Arabic speakers socially evaluate linguistic variation, especially when it comes to salient linguistic markers.

- Substratum interferences between Amazigh (as a native language) and Moroccan Arabic (as a second language learnt for communicative purposes) in domains such as prosody, intonation, syntax, etc.
