Doctoral Researcher in the Project Modernity, Migration and Minorities: Three Case Studies of Arabic in Contact

Muhadj Adnan studied the interdisciplinary master program Language – Interaction – Culture and completed her bachelor’s degree in Arabic Studies and Anthropology at the University of Bayreuth. Her doctoral research project concerns intergenerational variation in the speech of Iraqi and Syrian migrants and Arabic native speakers who have come to Germany since 2015. Her study on Arabic in Germany follows a tradition of research on immigrant language in the country. Using particularly sociolinguistic investigation with a database consisting of interviews, a further object of study is the online language use (computer-mediated communication) of the two groups. The study focuses on the one hand on the intergenerational differences arising within the groups and on the other hand on the degree to which a koineized variety can be defined among the two groups as an outcome of dialect contact. In addition to sociolinguistic variation and Arabic in contact, Muhadj’s main interests are also in the fields of language attitudes, multilingualism as well as language and identity.
