Hasnaa Essam Farag is an Egyptian scholar in the Department of Arabic Studies at the Faculty of Languages and Literature, University of Bayreuth. Her forthcoming dissertation is entitled “Beyond Lexical Meanings: A Sociopragmatic Analysis of Address Terms Among Couples in Egyptian TV Series, Style and Performance.” She has presented various aspects of her current research project at international conferences and workshops in Egypt, the UK, Germany, and Toronto.
Her academic background includes Arabic linguistics, English linguistics, applied linguistics, translation, literature, and Islamic studies. Hasnaa’s research interests lie at the intersection of these disciplines, with a particular focus on Arabic in Africa.
Academic Career
- (2021- Present): Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Arabic Studies, Faculty of Languages and Literature, BIGSAS, University of Bayreuth.
- (February 2024): Participating in a winter school of Arabic sociolinguistics at the Moulay Ismail University, Meknes, Morocco.
- (June 2023): Participating in a summer school of Survey and Questionnaire Design at Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands.
- (2018): MA in teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language, Department of Applied Linguistics, the American University in Cairo, Egypt, with a sociolinguistics thesis entitled "Howwa wheyya: Performance and Gendered Style in the Egyptian Caricature [The Piece of Paper] " https://fount.aucegypt.edu/etds/1345/
- (2010): B.A. in English Language, Literature and Simultaneous Translation, English Department, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. Al-Azhar is well-known for its majors in Arabic and Islamic studies, alongside specialized disciplines. Hasnaa was an Al-Azhar student since primary school.
- (2010 – 2019): Teaching Arabic as a foreign language and holding various positions in this field, including education vice manager, developer, trainer, and senior instructor. Individual tutoring at the American Embassy in Cairo (2019-2020) and the American University in Cairo (2017-2018).
