Sources and their Materiality Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Global South
24.10.2025 Organizers: Prof. Dr. Nora Lafi (Chair of Islamic Studies)/ Dr. Felipe B. Francisco (Arabic Studies)
This research seminar explores diverse methodologies and theoretical approaches to studying sources in their material form, considering how such sources contribute to interpreting and understanding historical and social realities. These include documentary and literary texts—in Arabic, Swahili, Turkish, Persian, Portuguese and Spanish—, visual materials, religious artifacts, archaeological evidence and architecture, artistic exhibitions, and other expressions of cultural heritage viewed from southern perspectives. The seminar features guest speakers from various disciplines who examine the role of these sources in revealing the historical and cultural entanglements that have linked the Islamic worlds—across Africa, Asia, and al-Andalus—both among themselves and with Latin America over the centuries.
Friday 10.15–11.45, Room: MuVi-Raum (S 81, NW II).
